Weddings: Readings and Speeches
Watching the wedding of HRH Prince William and Kate Middleton as they became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, naturally the Abbey clergy impress due to their training in the art of public speaking, but the honours for ‘speaker of the day’ must go to James Middleton.
The brother of the bride delivered a clear and moving reading, not just to the assembled congregation of crowned heads, politicians and celebrities, but to the estimated two billion watching worldwide.
He must have been somewhat more nervous than the usual wedding speech-maker, but handled the process in an apparently effortless and charming manner. Congratulations to Mr Middleton for his professionalism, which is of course not achieved without acquiring the necessary skills.
And may I recommend that all you best men, readers and fathers of the bride peruse our training programme before embarking on your own oration – albeit in front of a slightly smaller crowd…
